What's it like to be a Tax Agent?
As a registered Tax Agent, you will prepare and lodge your clients’ tax returns. Registered Tax Agents are the only people allowed to charge a fee to prepare and lodge clients’ tax returns.
Tasks and duties
- Viewing and updating your clients' taxation details.
- Preparing, lodging and printing activity statements for your clients.
- Reviewing client account information.
- Communicating with the Australian Tax Office on behalf of your clients.
- Requesting refunds and credit transfers on behalf of your clients.
- Viewing payment options and making payment plans for your clients.

To become a registered Tax Agent, you must satisfy certain qualifications and experience requirements, which are set out in the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2009 (TASR). There are many pathways to becoming a qualified Tax Agent, with the most common involving a combination of education in accountancy and law, and work experience.
- 1.Complete qualification from an Australian tertiary institution that is approved by the Board in accountancy.
- 2.Complete a Board approved course in Australian taxation law. Your Australian taxation law course should include a component in the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code).
- 3.Complete a Board approved course in commercial law.
- 4.Complete the equivalent of 12 months of full-time, relevant experience in the past five years.
- 5.Once you have completed the education and experience requirements you must then register with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).
