What's it like to be a Signal Technician?
Signal Technicians are licenced electricians who specialise in working on railway signalling equipment. They assemble, install, test and maintain railway signals and peripheral equipment. Signal Technicians need excellent attention to detail, the ability to find faults and troubleshoot electrical systems, and a good understanding of railway technologies. They work for railway companies in industries such as manufacturing, transport and mining.
Tasks and duties
- Installing, assembling, wiring, testing and maintaining railway signalling equipment.
- Installing and maintaining railway signalling peripherals and power supplies.
- Repairing and adjusting signalling equipment.
- Identifying performance issues and reporting differences between scheduled maintenance and actual maintenance performed.
- Installing and maintaining telemetry systems and train detection equipment such as axle counters.
- Installing, monitoring and maintaining level crossings.
How to become a Signal Technician
To become a Signal Technician, you need to complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) as well as Certificate IV in Electrical - Rail Signalling (UEE41220). An electrician’s licence, relevant industry experience and a driver’s licence are also essential.
- Hold a current driver’s licence.
- Complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820). You can complete this as part of an apprenticeship. It usually takes around four years to become qualified, including six to 12 months of employment.
- Once qualified, attain your electrician’s licence by applying through your local state provider.
- Complete a Certificate IV in Electrical - Rail Signalling (UEE41220). This usually takes two years and is a nationally recognised qualification.
- Complete drug and alcohol screenings as required.
