What's it like to be a Beekeeper?
Beekeepers, also known as Apiarists, are managers of beehives. They oversee the production of honey and related products (such as beeswax, pollen and royal jelly).
Tasks and duties
- Managing and monitoring the health and condition of the hive by inspecting the colonies for any indication of disease and controlling pests.
- Transporting hives to locations that have potential for honey production or areas where bees can assist with the pollination of nut, seed, fruit and vegetable crops.
- Breeding and raising bees for honey production while ensuring the supply of bees, stock and nutrition.
Beekeepers are usually individuals who enjoy physical work, being outdoors, as well as taking an interest in plants and insects. Being able to work independently and being willing to travel long distances (moving hives and transporting live bees) is an important part of the role.Most Beekeepers work in agriculture, forestry, manufacturing or commercial industries.
How to become a Beekeeper
You don’t need formal qualifications to work as a Beekeeper as you usually will receive informal on-the-job training. However, employers generally require the successful completion of Year 10.
- Explore the possibility of a Certificate III in Beekeeping (AHC32016) or work experience with a commercial Beekeeper. Courses are usually workplace-based and delivered through coaching by an experienced beekeeper.
- Beekeepers are required to register with the environmental or primary industry department in their state or territory.
- Once you have experience, you may wish to further your career by focusing on queen bee production, pollination or work towards becoming an apiary inspector or advisor.
