RMIT provides the best social work education in Australia. All courses require students to think critically about the content and understand the nuance, grey areas, and complexities required for social work practice. There is a good mix of skills-based and theory-based subjects. They allow students to have some control over the placements they do through allowing them to nominate preferences, which is something many universities don’t do. While it is an on-campus course, there are several online options for many subjects. If you are deciding which uni to study social work, RMIT is definitely the best option for Victorians.

Very well prepared for life after university and good graduate opportunities. The course and teaching staff assist and support students in making linkages with organisations and services for practical experience and graduate opportunities. Some poor teaching staff and incredibly disappointing lack of structure to the course, especially in final (honours) year. Little to no support for the honours thesis and very difficult to balance work/study/unpaid placement in third and fourth years.

This course taught me far more than I expected. I was already a qualified counsellor and had worked on the fringes of the social work profession (in the fields of family violence, human trafficking, marginalised women and girls) for several years before taking up this course at RMIT, so I did not expect to learn a great deal more than I already knew. However, what I gained was a depth of understanding about thought systems and power structures, in Australia and worldwide. I learned to question and dissect assumptions, how to challenge and create policies, how to to develop programs and so much more. I was challenged to dive deeper and think outside the box. I have gained a level of confidence and clarity of thinking that I did not anticipate when I enrolled in this degree. I was impressed with the teaching staff and the level of compassionate support I was given when I needed it. It has been hard work! But so worth while.
